Why did the British feel the need to survey in India?

1. The British gave a lot of importance to surveys as they felt that to rule a country, it was necessary to know it properly. Therefore, they carried out detailed surveys by the early 19th century in order to map the entire country.


2. They carried out various types of surveys: revenue survey for villages, soil quality, flora, fauna, cropping pattern, etc.


3. They introduced a census in the country which was to be carried out every ten years.


They tried to gather every information required for administering a country.
