The main cause for Matilda’s ruin was her desire for looking pretty. She was poor as well. She wanted to look pretty for the party but she doesn’t have anything to wear. She asked her husband for the dress to which he gave a few hundred bucks to get a new dress. Then she doesn’t have any jewellery to carry and then she borrowed it from her friend. But accidentally she lost it somewhere for which she has to pay a huge sum of money with interest. Thus, in the hope of looking pretty ruined his entire life.


I being her friend would have helped her in finding the jewellery. I would have asked her not to borrow such costly jewellery. I would have suggested her that the beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. I would have also helped her in contributing the money and would have suggested other way out to come out of this difficult situation.

The narrator was in his training period as a clerk in a big law firm. He was not given any practical work as a lawyer. The narrator’s meeting with Lutkin’s mother was very disappointing. She shouted at him a lot. She knew it previously that Lutkin’s was making a fool of the narrator. She also ran after him to hit him. The narrator was informed previously that Lutkin’s mother was a very dangerous lady and is always eager to initiate a fight. She also took the narrator to the kitchen and took the iron rod out from the stove and threatened them. She chased them and laughed at them.
