Q8 of 45 Page 3

Multipurpose projects have failed to achieve their purpose for which they were built. Give reasons.

Dams are called multipurpose projects because of the variety of purposes they solve. However, they have faced objections because they failed to achieve the purpose for which they were built.

1. Multipurpose projects were built to control floods. Instead due to sedimentation in the reservoir, they triggered floods.

2. They have proved to be the most unsuccessful in controlling floods during excessive rainfall.

3. Sedimentation also leads the floodplains being deprived of natural fertilizers like silt.

4. During heavy rainfall, the government authorities become bound to release water from dams which may result in floods.
