State the meaning of functional group in a carbon compound. Write the functional group present ethanol and ethanoic acid. (CBSE 2014)

Functional group is defined as an atom or a group of atoms which makes carbon compounds reactive and also the decides the various properties of the compounds.

(i) The functional group present in Ethanol is: Alcohol i.e. –OH group.


(ii) The functional group present in Ethanoic acid is: Carboxylic acid i.e. –COOH group.
