Read the following passage and answer the question that follows:
"For the success of democracy, one must train oneself in the art of self-discipline. In democracies, one should care less for himself and more for others. There can't be any divided loyalty. All loyalties must exclusively be centred around the state. If in a democracy, you create rival loyalties or you create a system in which an individual or a group, instead of suppressing his extravagance cares not for larger or other interests, then democracy is doomed."
In light of the above passage highlight the values which a loyal citizen of a democratic country should uphold.
Democracy is the form of government that is for the people, of the people and by the people. Democracy is a much superior form of government compared to any other form of government in the world. It is instrumental in promoting the dignity and freedom of its citizens. The democratic government promotes equality and freedom in all aspects of the public. There will be no discrimination among the people in terms of gender, caste, race, wealth and language. No person will be excluded from the process of selecting the representative of the state.
But the success of the system is not limited to the successful functioning of the government. People should also actively participate in the process. Some values which a loyal citizen of a democratic country should uphold are:
• Self-discipline: The people should be actively involved in voicing their opinions and protests towards the government. But this should be done in a more disciplined manner without fully disrupting the functioning of the system or the rights of the individuals.
• Selflessness: The citizens within the framework should not be selfish to be concerned with only their wants and requirements. This is also applicable to the political parties. The marginalised and poor sections must be given opportunities to express their needs.
• Loyalty: All the citizens of the country, irrespective of their caste, religion, region or ethnicity should be loyal to the country. Democracy will be destructive if the loyalties of the citizens are bifurcated by the differences in the social and economic categorisation.
