Highlight the most novel aspect of the Chipko movement.

The Chipko movement was the harbinger of populist movements in the country. It started in 1973 in Uttarakhand. It started when the Forest Department gave permission to a sports company to use a piece of land by cutting the trees that had earlier been demanded by the people for making agricultural tools. The most novel aspect of the movement was the active participation of women. The stood hugging the trees, thus preventing the cutting of the trees. They also protested against the alcoholism and other social issues. The collective ownership of resources and inculcation community participation in the protection of forest resources was also raised. This movement became the inspiration for the organisation of other movements throughout the country.
