Mention the measures proposed to promote sustainable development in the Command area of Indira Gandhi Canal Project which is meant to restore ecological balance.

The following are the measures to promote sustainable development in the Command area:

a. There is a necessity of implementing water management policy. Protective irrigation is expected in the first stage and extensive irrigation in stage II.

b. Adequate financial and institutional support for cultivation should be provided to the people who have a poor economic background.

c. Reclamation of areas affected by waterlogging and soil salinity.

d. Afforestation, pasture development and shelterbelt plantation are recommended in the second stage.

e. People should be encouraged to grow plantation crops. In short, the cropping pattern should not be strict to water-intensive crops.

f. In order to reduce conveyance loss of water, CAD programmes like the lining of water courses, land development and levelling and equal distribution of water in the command area should be strictly implemented.

Agriculture, along with allied activities and animal husbandry should develop with other sectors of the economy. This can lead to economic sustainability.
