Q4 of 16 Page 84

'While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day, And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue'

a) Pick out the words which describe the following:

• clouds

• day

• plains

b) Why does the poet use these words?

• Clouds – “barred”.

• Day- “soft-dying”.

• Plains- “stubble”.

b) “barred” means a band of colour and light. The clouds are barred in the lights of sunset and are blossomed in the white patches of sky.

“soft-dying” means as a day is dying during the sunset but it isn’t a tragic death, it is soft or a gentle sunset.

“Stubble” means a rough surface. As the plains have been harvested and the crops have been cultivated thus the plain is bare and no crops have left there.
