What is the purpose of a Parliament?

The Parliament also known as Sansad is the highest law-making institution in India. Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha are the two houses in the Parliament consisting of 245 and 545 members respectively. The Parliament was created in India with various purposes which are as follows:

• The Parliament was created after 1947 so that people could participate in the decision making process and approves the government in the rule.

• Parliament represents the faith that people have in the democratic rule of the country. India follows principles of democracy and the Indian Parliament is a symbolic representation of this faith.

• In a democratic system of India, Parliament has enormous power as it stands as the representative of the people.

• The election of Lok Sabha is held once in five years. As the country is divided into different constituencies, from each of these, one person is elected to the Parliament. The elected candidates belong to the different political parties and become the Members of Parliament or MPs. They together form the Parliament and then Parliament has to perform various functions for which it was created such as to choose the National Government, to control and guide and to keep the government informed.

• The most important purpose of Parliament is the making of the laws for the smooth functioning of the National Government.
