What is a FIR?

The foremost function of the police is to file an FIR in order to continue with the case or crime. FIR or First Information Report has to be filed for the police to start the investigation. According to the law, the police who are in charge of the police station have to file an FIR when an individual comes with information about the known offence. The complainant could give the information in written or oral form.

An FIR is the first information Report which the complainant gives to the police soon after the offence is committed. The FIR should include the date, time, place of the offence, the basic details related to the offence like the description of the event. Along with this, if the person knows then he can also mention the identity of the accused person and witnesses if any. It should also include the name and address of the complainant. The pattern of FIR should be like this, the police register an FIR and complainant has to sign on that. It is the legal right of the complainant to get the free copy of the FIR from the police.
