Soil is the topmost layer of the earth’s surface. It is the most important resource and it is also a renewable resource. It is a living system. It is the medium for plant growth. It supports different types of living organisms on earth. It takes millions of years to form soil. It is a mixture of organic and inorganic substance.

Different types of soils that are found in India are:

*Alluvial Soil: It is found in Gujarat and Rajasthan. It is also found in the eastern coastal plains particularly in the deltas of the Mahanadi, the Godavari, the Krishna and the Kaveri rivers. These soils are very fertile. These soils are ideal for the growth of sugarcane, paddy, wheat and other cereals.

*Black Soil: These soils are found in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Malwa and Chhattisgarh. It is also known as regur soil. It is black in colour. These soils are suitable for growing cotton and sugarcane. These soils are rich in soil nutrients such as calcium carbonate, magnesium, potash and lime.

*Red and Yellow Soil: These soils are found in Odisha, Chhattisgarh, southern parts of the Ganga plain. These soils are red in colour due to the diffusion of iron in crystalline and metamorphic rocks. It looks yellow when it occurs in a hydrated form.

*Laterite Soil: These soils are found in Odisha, some parts of West Bengal and Maharashtra. These soils support deciduous and evergreen forests. They are rich in humus.
