Q10 of 10 Page 137

Give reasons why British industries failed to recapture after the war.

British Industries failed to re-capture their markets after the war because:

• During WWI, Indian goods recaptured their market.

• British industries were producing war goods, so, import of British products in India declined.

• Setting up of Indian industries with modern technologies increased production and decreased the cost of home-made products.

• The guilds became stronger and started to demand their fair shares.

• The Swadeshi movements and other nationalist movements encouraged the use of Indian products which was a major blow on the British economy.

• Other European countries modernized their markets and it was tough for the British to compete with the post World War.
