Write about the two types of modern cities. Describe some characteristics of cities.

Two types of modern cities can be divided as follows:


a. large cities called metropolises.


b. Not too large cities.


They can also be divided as:


• Imperial modern city e.g. London.


• Cities in the subcontinent under the colonial government. E.g. Bombay.


Both these modern cities have some common characteristics. Like :


• They were the seat of political and administrative works.


• They catered to a huge population belonging to different classes and occupations.


• The population in these cities expanded rapidly due to large scale migration.


• Overcrowding of cities led to poor housing and sanitation conditions.


• The industries were having surplus labours. So, labour rate was cheap. Unemployment was also common.


• The population was divided into rich and poor sections.


• The rich lived in spacious, healthy living areas and led a life of prosperity.


• The poor were forced to live in unplanned, unhygienic living areas where housing quality was very poor. Sanitation was also unplanned.
