Why is Bombay a city of dreams for some, while a city of hardship for others?

Bombay was called the city of dreams for some and the city of hardship for others.


City of dreams-


• Rising of trade and industries gave rise to more occupation sources.


• Wealthy merchants and traders prospered with the rise of trade and industrialization.


• The film industry in Bombay was a new source of employment. It employed around 5,20,000 people the majority of whom were migrants.


City of hardships-


• The overcrowding of the city led to an unplanned settlement and sanitation problems.


• It also caused ecological imbalance as the natural environment was rapidly altered to fit into this huge population.


• Air, water, land and air pollution by industries and transport systems led to the decline of living conditions.


• Factories contaminated the land and nearby water sources.


• There was a widespread health hazard due to this uncontrolled pollution and bad sanitation facilities.


• The living condition of poor and working-class was very low with a meagre source of income.
