Federalism essentially refers to the vertical division of power among different levels of government. Besides the Union and State governments, the Indian federal structure has also opened its arms towards the third tier of local government in the form of local government, both urban and rural.

This division of the country’s government into a federal set-up has brought about other changes as well. Firstly, there are reservations in the government structure for seats for different caste groups, and people are free to vote for their chosen representatives to power. This ensures that even the minority communities obtain a fair share of representation in the government.
