How caste strongly linked to the economic status of a country?

Caste is an important source of economic inequality because it regulates access to resources of various kinds. According to the National Sample Survey, caste is linked to the economic status of an individual. For instance, Dalits have a low standard of living due to their low economic status. If we look at the poverty line we would find out that as compared to higher caste Dalits and Adivasis are more in under below poverty line. This was because in the past, the so-called ‘untouchable’ castes were denied the right to own land, while only the so-called ‘twice-born' castes had the right to education and for which their economic status got better than the backward classes in the society.
