Discuss casteism and its effect on our society.

a. The organisation of people into different social groups is called the caste system. The social structure of India is also based on this system. Casteism refers to the social inequalities that are faced by the lower caste.

b. The members of the same caste form their own social community, follow similar occupation and marry within their own caste.

c. The different caste groups are categorized from the highest to the lowest. This is called the caste hierarchy.

The ill-effects of caste are mentioned below:

a. Casteism can easily disrupt social harmony.

b. It diverts attention from other more important issues.

c. It is often observed that the political parties appeal to specific caste to win the elections.

d. The people are also biased towards the people of their own caste during elections.

e. The different caste members engage in conflicts leading to tension and violence.

f. Many people belonging to low caste do not have proper access to education.

g. It is against the principle of democracy of liberty, equality, and freedom.

h. The interest of one specific caste is favoured over the interest of another caste.
