Ancient towns represent those towns that are over 2,000 years old with a certain historical background while developing as cultural and religious centres. From the ruins of these ancient towns stem out other towns called medieval towns. Examples of such ancient towns include Varanasi, Pataliputra (Patna), Prayag (Allahabad), Madurai, etc.
