Why is the sugar industry a seasonal industry?

The sugar industry a seasonal industry because the main raw material used for sugar manufacture is sugarcane, which is not available throughout the year, but only in certain specific times of the year. In India, January to March is the period of sowing the sugarcane crop and December to March is the period of harvesting of the sugarcane crop. Typically a sugarcane crop takes twelve to eighteen months to mature. Thus it can be clearly understood that the crop is not available throughout the year, and thus sugarcane production also has to be done only when the sugarcane crop gets harvested.
