Q2 of 12 Page 9

Examine the problems that have emerged in the ‘Indira Gandhi Canal Command Area’.

The ‘Indira Gandhi Canal Command Area’ has used the methods of intensive irrigation and excessive use of water in the crop fields to improve the condition of agriculture in various areas of Rajasthan. But this has led mainly to two major problems, which are waterlogging and soil salinity. Excess water which is not really required in the crop fields gets logged in the fields causing damage to agricultural crops. Also due to excess of irrigation and waterlogging problem, the salts present in irrigation water get deposited in the fields causing the soil to become highly saline.
