What is the role of WTO as an international organisation? Why has it been criticised?

The role of WTO is as follows:-

• It is the only international organisation that deals with the global rules of trade regarding trade and various nations.

• It sets rules and regulations for various trading systems.

• It settles disputes between various nations.

• It covers trade in services like telecommunication and banking and other issues like intellectual rights.

The reasons over which the World Trade Organisation (WTO) has been criticised and opposed are as follows:-

• It is argued that free trade does not make ordinary people’s life more prosperous as they widen the gap between the rich and the poor.

• Many developing countries have not fully opened their markets to products for developing countries.

• It is argued about issues of health, worker’s rights, child labour, and environment are ignored.
