The settlements are divided into two types based on the location and facilities i.e. rural and urban, but there is no consensus.

• Population is not a factor which distinguishes rural and urban settlements as many villages of India and China have a much greater population than in towns.

• People living in villages have occupation like agriculture, fishing, and animal husbandry but in many developed countries, a large number of people prefer to live in rural settlements although they work in cities.
