Classify urban settlements on the basis of size, functions and services available into five categories and explain the importance of each type.

The types of Urban Settlements:-

Town- The concept of town closely resembles that of village. The population of town is quite lower than that of the other Urban Settlements. Some functions like manufacturing, retail, wholesale, trade exits in town.


City- A bigger form of the town is known as the city. The city is, in fact, the physical form of the highest and the most complex type of associate life. They have greater economic functions. The facilities of cities are much bigger than those of the towns starting form transport, education, employment and other amenities.


Conurbation- The term conurbation is applicable to a large area of urban development that resulted from the merging of originally separate towns or cities. Example- Greater London, Tokyo.


Million City- As the name suggests, the cities which have a million inhabitants are termed as million cities.


Megalopolis- Megalopolis refers to a great city like Megacity. It has millions of population. Example- The urban landscape stretching from Boston in the north to south of Washington in U.S.A is the best-known example of a megalopolis
