(a) Following reactions occur at cathode during electrolysis of aqueous silver chloride solution:

On basis of their standard reduction potential (E0) values, which reaction is feasible at cathode and why?

(b) Define limiting molar conductivity. Why conductivity of an electrolytic solution decreases with the decrease in concentration?

(a) On basis of their standard reduction potential (E0) values

The reduction of silver is more feasible than hydrogen as its standard reduction potential is more positive than that of hydrogen.

Gibbs free energy is directly proportional to -. For a reaction to be feasible should be negative, so from the equation we can conclude that more positive the value of more negative will be and hence the reaction more feasible.

(b) The molar conductivity of a solution when the concentration is approaching zero (highly diluted solution) is known as limiting molar conductivity.

Conductivity is inverse of resistance. More the resistance less is the conductivity and visa versa.
