Q19 of 26 Page 1

Predict the products of the following reactions:

(i)

(ii)

(iii)

(i) Aldehydes and ketones can be reduced to the respective hydrocarbon by converting them with hydrazine and treating the obtained hydrazone with bases like potassium sodium hydroxide. This conversion is known as Wolf- Kishner reduction.

(propane) +N2

(ii) Iodoform test is used to detect methyl ketones (R- CO-CH3) and secondary alcohols like R-CH(OH)-CH3 . They react with iodine in presence of base like sodium hydroxide to give iodoform which is a yellow colour solid.

(iii) Sodium acetate reacts with soda and lime to give methane gas. This reaction is used for laboratory preparation of methane.
