(a) Give chemical tests to distinguish between the following pairs of compounds.

(i) (CH3)2NH and (CH3)3N


(ii) Aniline and Ethylamine


(b) Write IUPAC name of CH3CH2NHCH3.


(i) Chemical test to distinguish between (CH2)2NH (secondary amine) and (CH3)3N (tertiary amine) is reaction with benzenesulphonyl chloride.


Benzenesulphonyl chloride which is also known as Hinsberg’s Reagent reacts differently with primary, secondary and tertiary amines.


C6H5SOCl + (CH3)2NH¾ C6H5SON(CH3)2


N,N- Dimethylbenzenesulphonamide


This compound formed does not have any H- atom attached to N- atom. Hence, it is not acidic and product is insoluble n alkali.


C6H5SOCl + (CH3)3N¾ No reaction


Tertiary amines do not react with Benzenesulphonyl chloride.


(ii) Chemical test to distinguish between Aniline (aromatic amine) and Ethyl amine (aliphatic amine) is azo dye test.


A dye is produced when aniline is treated with HONO whereas brisk effervescence of N2 gas is obtained when ethyl amine is treated under same conditions.





(b) IUPAC name of CH3CH2NHCH3 is N-methylethanamine.


Here, the main chain is of 2 carbon and 1 nitrogen atom and the methyl group on N acts as a substituent.
