1. It was founded in 1980 after reviving Bharatiya Jana Sangh.


2. It believes in the revival of cultural nationalism or ‘Hindutva’.


3. It wants a uniform civil code for every citizen and a ban on religious conversions


4. Earlier its support base was limited to urban areas of north and west but now has extended across the country.


Note: BJP won the 2014 general elections with a clear majority. It has been the main opposition party before. It is the leader of the National Democratic Alliance.
