Why did India adopt multi-party system?

India adopted a multi-party system because it allows a variety of interests and opinions to enjoy political representation and in a vast country like India; one, two or three parties cannot reflect this social and geographical diversity.

NOTE – One-party system – Ruled by one party. For example – Communist party of China.


Two-party system – Two main parties having a serious chance of winning majority. For example – U.S and U. K


Multi-party system – The existence of several parties. For example – India
