Iron and steel industry is called the basic industry because-

1. All the other industries — heavy, medium and light, depend on it for their machinery.

2. It is also helpful in providing employment.

3. It also helps in the development of agriculture.

Note: Iron and steel industry is the basis of several other primary, secondary and tertiary jobs.
