(i) Nicola meant to say that he and Jacopo did many jobs like shining shoes, selling fruits, hawking newspapers, running errands, guiding tourists to places in Verona, selling cigarettes to American tourists etc. Through these jobs, they earned money for their ailing sister, Lucia.
