“Pen is mightier than the sword”. Elucidate with reference to the poem ‘Not Marble nor Gilded Monuments’.

The above lines appear in the 55th sonnet of Shakespeare’s ‘Not Marble Nor Gilded monuments’. Memories of his young friend have been immortalised by Shakespeare through his pen in the poem. The poet is of the opinion that the pen will outshine the princely gilded monuments built by rulers. The monuments will be destroyed over time but the lines penned by him will remain forever.
