For solving the quadratic equations x2 + 8x = -15 by completing square method, find the third term.

Given quadratic equation x2 + 8x = -15

⇒ x2 + 8x = -15


First two terms of the quadratic equation are x2 + 8x, then the third term must be = 16.


Adding 16 to both sides of the equation


⇒ x2 + 8x + 16 = - 15 + 16


⇒ x2 + 2 × 4 × x + 42 = 1


⇒ (x + 4)2 = 1


⇒ x + 4 = ± 1


⇒ x + 4 = 1 or x + 4 = -1


⇒ x = -4 + 1 or x = -1 - 4


⇒ x = -3 or x = - 5


∴ x = -5 or -3
