Equating each element of the matrix equation with corresponding element


x2 + 6x = – 9


x2 + 6x + 9 = 0


x( x + 3) + 3(x + 3) = 0


(x + 3) (x + 3) = 0


x = – 3 , – 3


y2 – 3y = 4


y2 – 3y – 4 = 0


y( y – 4) + 1( y – 4) = 0


(y + 1) (y – 4) = 0


y = – 1 or 4


Hence the values of x = – 3, – 3 and y = – 1 , 4
