Q2 of 18 Page 73

A box contains four slips numbered 1, 2, 3, 4 and another box contains two slips numbered 1, 2. If one slip is taken from each, what is the probability of the sum of numbers being odd? What is the probability of the sum being even?

Let box 1 contains slip numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4 and box 2 contains slips numbered 1 and 2.

Let make pair of outcome from different boxes

i.e. (outcome of box 1, outcome of box 2)

Outcomes:

(1, 1), (2, 1), (3, 1), (4, 1)

(1, 2), (2, 2), (3, 2), (4, 2)

Total number of outcomes = 8

Outcomes having sum of the numbers as odd = 4

Outcomes having sum of the numbers as even = 4

Probability of the sum of numbers being odd

= 0.5

Probability of the sum of numbers being even

= 0.5
