Q1 of 53 Page 77

In the following, you are given the product pq and the sum p + q. Determine p and q:

pq = –12 and p + q = 11

As, p + q = 11

p = 11–q

putting the value of q in other equation,

pq = –12

(11–q)q = –12

11q–q2 = –12

q2–11q–12 = 0

q2 + q–12q–12 = 0

q(q + 1)–12(q + 1) = 0

(q–12)(q + 1) = 0

So. q = 12 & q = –1

As, p = 11–q

thus, p = 11–12 & p = 11 + 1

p = –1 & p = 12
