What is the difference between the nation-state and the modern state?

Nation states in Europe were formed after the abolition of monarchy and dynasty rule. In the nation-state, the citizens and the Government enjoyed common identity. This shared identity was based on common language, customs, and other traditions.

The power of a modern state is centralised. People belonging to a different culture, following different traditions and speaking different languages lived together.
