Q2 of 22 Page 2

What were the defects of the Weimar Republic?

The Weimar Republic was unstable due to some inherent defects in its administration. They were as below:

1. The system of proportional representation led to rule by coalitions as there was no majority party.

2. Article 48 gave powers to the President to proclaim emergency, suspend civil rights and rule by decree.

These led to twenty different cabinets lasting on an average of 239 days, and liberal use of Article 48. The instability in the government made the Weimar Republic prone to dictatorship.
