Q13 of 30 Page 56

Give reason - Why we cannot store silver nitrate solution in a copper vessel.

Copper occupies a higher position in the metal activity series as compared to silver and thus it is more reactive as compared to the latter. More reactive metals tend to displace less reactive metals from their salt solutions.

2AgNO3 (aq) + Cu(s) Cu (NO3)2(aq) + 2Ag(s).

Copper will displace silver from its solution, and as a result, copper nitrate and silver metal are formed. But we wanted to store the silver nitrate solution not create silver metal. Thus the solution cannot be stored in the copper vessel.
