Q4 of 5 Page 52

Find out more about Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi. In what ways would she have been an unusual woman for her times?

Rani Lakshmibai was the Queen of Jhansi. She was one such Indian ruler who participated in the revolt of 1857 as against the growing atrocities of the Britishers. She wanted East India Company to accept her son as the legal heir of the throne after the death of her husband. But when company rejected her proposal, she supported the mutiny by sepoys and fought along with Tantia Tope, the General of Nana Sahib.

Yes, it is true that she has been an unusual woman for her times. At that time, when women were not allowed to go out alone, she became one such woman who acquired the throne and became the queen of Jhansi after the death of her husband. She demanded her rights and on the refusal of it she fought against the British regime. She actively participated in the battle so that she could end the oppressive rule of British.

Because of all these reasons, Rani Lakshmibai in our Indian history quoted as “khoob ladi mardani thi jo Jhansi waali thi wo”. Her contribution to our freedom struggle as a woman is still remembered, and she is the inspiration to many women in our country.
