Difference between Alvars and Nayanars?

Alvars were the saints who devoted to Vishnu and Nayanars were saints devoted to Shiva. These two sects emerged during the 7th and 9th centuries. The followers of these two sects were from all castes including those who were considered untouchables.


They were critical of Buddhists and Jainas. They would roam from place to place singing songs in praise of their Gods.


Nayanars belonged to different caste backgrounds such as potters, Brahmanas, Soldiers, hunters. Two sets of their songs are called Tevaram and Tiruvacakam.


Alvars were 12 in the number who were also from a different background. Their songs were called Divya Prabhandam.
