A taxi driver charges Rs. 5 for the first kilometre and for subsequent distance charge Rs. 3 per kilometre, find a linear equation with distance covered to be ‘x’ and total charge to be ‘y’.

Let the total charge to be y.


For first km, y = 5


For second km, y = 5 + 3


For third km, y = 5 + 3 × 2


Therefore,


Total Charge for x km distance will be given by,


y = 5 + 3(x – 1)


y = 5 + 3x – 3


y = 3x + 2
