The cost of a ball pen is Rs. 5 less than half of the cost of the fountain pen. Write this statement as a linear equation in two variables.

Let the cost of one fountain pen be Rs. ‘x’ and the cost of one ball pen is Rs. ‘y’


Given, the cost of the ball pen is Rs. 5 less than half of the cost of a fountain pen.


⇒ y = (x/2) – 5


⇒ 2y = x – 10


⇒ x – 2y – 10 = 0
