What is vegetative propagation? State two advantages and two disadvantages of this method. ( CBSE 2008)

The growth of new plants from vegetative parts of the plant like roots, stem, leaves other than the seeds is called vegetative propagation.

Disadvantages are


i. There is no variation hence development of new and better varieties will not be possible.


ii. They are more prone to diseases which are species specific.


Advantages are


i. It is easier, cheaper and rapid method of propagation.


ii. It is very useful to plants who do not produce seeds. They can be propagated by this method.
