The last two lines of the poem paint a contrasting image about the soldiers who went to war. It tells the reader that the men who were serious and happy to serve their country by fighting for it have returned from the war as helpless children; their hearts are filled with anger and hatred for those who sent them to war.

(i) This phrase conveys the meaning that when someone becomes a soldier, he does so with a serious desire to serve his nation by protecting it as he loves his country and he is glad and happy protect it from the enemies.


(ii) In this phrase, it is being indicated that a soldier who has been confronted by war and survived it by getting wounded and seeing his friends die doesn’t look at the non-combatants as someone innocent. The soldier rather believes them to be the reason for his suffering and therefore hates those who made him go to war.
