Why is it important that the government does not promote any one religion?

It is important that the government does not promote any one religion because if the government itself does not follow the rules of secularism as given in the constitution of the country, decisions will also not have any motive of following it. The government must act as a role model of a secular state. It must show that equal treatment of the people without considering their religious background is important for the harmonious development of the country.
