(a) The two Daimyo (military men cum landholders) families were the Tara and the Minamota families. They tended to ignore the ruling powers in Kyoto.


(b) Yoritomo, from the Minamoto family, emerged victorious.


(c) In 1192 AD, Yoritomo was given the title of Sei-i-tai-Shogun, or Barbarian-subduing-Great-General by the Emperor. It was a hereditary title and came with the power to govern.


(d) Yoritomo established the capital of the first Shogunate at Kamakura. So, the first Shogunate is known as the Kamakura Shogunate.
