Impact of Crusades.

The Crusades signalled the death of feudalism. Many of the noblemen who went East to take part in the conflict did not return, and the peasants took the opportunity to break free from their social contract and the land. The diminishing of noble powers led to an increase in the powers of the monarchies of England and France, however, the Papacy lost prestige as a result of the Crusades. Trade flourished as demand increased in the East, and Venice, Pisa and Genoa became important commercial centres in the Mediterranean region. Constantinople lost its importance as a trade mediator between the East and the West.
