What is the significance of the Bhakra Nangal dam?

Bhakra Nangal Dam is located in the border of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. It is the second tallest dam in Asia. It was built on Sutlej River. It was part of the larger multipurpose project. It is one of the earliest river valley development schemes undertaken after the independence of India.

Bhakra Management Board is assigned for the administration, maintenance and operation of the dam. The members of the board are appointed by the government of India and the states of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.


Significance of Bhakra Nangal Dam:


*The primary use of the dam is irrigation. The dam provides irrigation water to Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat.


*It also provides electricity to Gujarat, Haryana and Rajasthan.


*It is also a major attraction for tourists.
