Dalit participation in the Civil Disobedience Movement was limited. Explain.

Dalit was a group of people who were treated as untouchables and of lower caste in Indian society. The Higher society of people treated them as a different based on their occupation, ethnic and was not allowed to touch the higher caste and to enter temples and to use their wells. Even though Gandhiji and several other stands oppose to this separation and also raised awareness among people that all humans are equal and have the same rights in society, the classification still continued.

The reasons for Dalit participation was limited in the Civil Disobedience Movement are as below

• The Congress party denied and ignored their participation in the movement fearing that it will offend the Higher caste people’s participation.

• The Dalit people’s leader believed that their problems would be solved only by different political solution and showed no interest in the movement rather focused to gain power and to choose their own leader.

• They mainly focused on new political empowerment and demand reserve seats in institutions and separate leader in the legislative council.

• Dalit was more apprehensive to the Congress initiated movement and limited their involvement.
