On the 1st of March, 2019, old and young alike joined together at the India Gate in the capital city Delhi for an unconventional programme. The topic: the problems faced by the elderly. It is a topic not often discussed about, and hence, the need to spread awareness.
The rally started with a 1km marathon which commenced at 6am. The main purpose of the marathon was to spread the message to need for exercise among elderly as well. The winners were awarded with medals.
Following this, there was an interactive session with social workers from Vrudha, a palliative and terminal care hospital in the Capital. Here, participants got an opportunity to hear first hand from the most experienced doctors about the hardships of old age, and how they deal with it. They could clear their doubts regarding care and welfare of the elderly family members.
A play was organised by members from several NGOs about the need for caring for those who took care of us as we grew up. It focused on the point that we have to be responsible and caring towards the elderly rather than see them as a burden.
The rally was a large success with about 1000 participants and the message was spread far and wide that only the body grows old, love does not.

World Disability Day
Good morning to one and all present here. Today, on the occasion of World Disability Day, I, Jayanti, am going to talk about the challenges of the physically disabled.
In current day, very few buildings are disabled friendly, and those that are supposed to be so are not completely equipped as necessary. Most public places are not wheelchair friendly and hence make them inaccessible to the disabled. Even some clinics do not have ramps. Toilets are not made keeping in mind the special needs of the disabled. Not only this, to this day, the disabled are a point of mockery to many and are mistreated instead of helped for their misfortunes.
We need to be caring for the people who have been crippled and are helpless. To achieve this, we must first fix ourselves. We must first learn to treat them as humans and equals to us in terms of deserving respect. All buildings that are henceforth approved for construction must be disabled friendly and must be checked by disabled people to make sure that it is truly functional. Toilets and public places must be equipped to help the disabled as well. In all ways, we mist begin to treat them in such a way that they too can stand head to head with the competition on this world.
Everyone has dreams, and we as a society must not let disability stop anyone from achieving theirs.
Thank you.
